Beacons and Eggs

This weekend the Valdez Avalanche Center, Alaska Avalanche Information Center and the North American Outdoor Institute hosted an Easter egg hunt  for the kids at Salmonberry Ski Hill.  Beacons, probes and shovels were handed out to the kiddos, and they worked together to find the Easter Bunny’s hidden goods.  The kids learned how to use their beacons to lead them to the goods, then how to use the probes to pinpoint the exact location, and finally how to quickly and efficiently shovel away all that pesky snow that kept them from their prize.  Additional seminars and a training course were set up for adults that wished to hone their avalanche rescue skills.

Big thanks to Debra McGhan from NAOI, and Katreen Wikstroem with the Valdez Avalanche Center for manning such a cool event!
